Nick Lowe: [ Main ] | [ Videos ]
I first purchased this album back when I was a Jr. in High School (1981), and over the years I about wore out the vinyl on that disk. With Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bremmer, and Terry Williams all at their best, this collection of songs is a Rock-N-Roll treat.
I recently re-purchased this CD and the memory flood gates of my youth came gushing back to me as I still remembered most every word to each of these upbeat, rockin` collection of songs.
Billy Bremmer and Terry Williams also shine on this one, but if you're a Dave Edmunds or Nick Lowe fan, this is simply a MUST buy.
Tracks:
1. Teacher Teacher - Rockpile, Pickett, Kenny
2. If Sugar Was as Sweet as You - Rockpile, Tex, Joe
3. Heart - Rockpile, Bremner, Billy
4. Now and Always - Rockpile, Lowe, Nick
5. A Knife and a Fork - Rockpile, Anderson, Kip
6. Play That Fast Thing (One More Time) - Rockpile, Lowe, Nick
7. Wrong Again (Let's Face It) - Rockpile, Difford, Chris
8. Pet You and Hold You - Rockpile, Bremner, Billy
9. Oh What a Thrill - Rockpile, Berry, Chuck

13. Take a Message to Mary - Rockpile, Bryant, Felice
14. Crying in the Rain - Rockpile, Greenfield, Howard
15. Poor Jenny - Rockpile, Bryant, Felice
16. When Will I Be Loved? - Rockpile, Everly, Phil
17. Back to Schooldays - Rockpile, Parker, Graham
18. They Called It Rock - Rockpile, Bremner, Billy
19. Crawling from the Wreckage - Rockpile, Parker, Graham
Anyone delving into the evolution of power pop in the 70s, should do themselves a favor and grab this album. I ran into Nick as I was checking out the early, arguably best, Costello albums. Yeah as a child of the 70s, I was familiar with the cryptic yet smart hit Cruel To Be Kind but never followed up. I think one of the reasons that Nick has fallen under the radar is that he has always been a musician/songwriter over being a star. Rather than get hung up on image, as it seems from this best of collection, he has consistently focused on craft.
Tracks:
1. So It Goes
2. Heart of the City
3. I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass - Nick Lowe, Bodnar, Andrew
4. Little Hitler - Nick Lowe, Edmunds, Dave
5. No Reason
6. 36 Inches High - Nick Lowe, Ford, Jim [1]
7. Marie Provost
8. American Squirm
9. Cracking Up
10. Big Kick, Plain Scrap!
11. Born Fighter
12. Switchboard Susan - Nick Lowe, Jupp, Mickey
13. Without Love
14. Cruel to Be Kind - Nick Lowe, Gomm, Ian
15. When I Write the Book
...
Man, I love this album. Only Nick could make an album, full of melancholy and regret, that you'd want to play over and over. The choice of covers seamlessly melds with his witty, self-deprecating originals. The sequence of the tracks is great, because just when you think he's gone suicidal, he throws in "Between Dark & Dawn", which is pretty hopeful. "Has She Got A Friend?" would be a huge hit from Nashville if the right pre-packaged pretty boy covers it. And the cover of "Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart" makes you wonder how this oldie was never a huge hit.
Tracks:
1. Homewrecker
2. Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart
3. Lately I've Let Things Slide
4. She's Got Soul
5. Cupid Must Be Angry
6. Indian Queens
7. Poor Side of Town
8. I'm A Mess
9. Between Dark And Dawn
10. Bygones (Won't Go)
11. Has She Got A Friend?
12. Let's Stay In And Make Love
This album is so much like being back on the bayou once again on a Saturday night, dancing on old wooden floors, having a cold drink and playing pool. The songs transform a car or living room into a long lost world of childhood nights when people had not much money, but something to laugh about, and took time to make the most of what they did have. I am definately buying my memories today.
Tracks:
1. Vagabond Special - Cajun All-Star Band
2. La Chanson d'une Fille de Quinze Ans - Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy
3. Diggy Liggy Lo - John Fogerty
4. Je Veux Plus Te Voir - Linda Thompson
5. Pa Janvier Laisse Moi M'en Aller - Patty Griffin
6. Les Flammes de'Enfer - Richard Thompson
7. Ma Mule - David Johansen
8. Ma Blonde Est Partie - Maria McKee
9. Blues de Bosco - Rodney Crowell
10. O, Ma Chere Tite Fille - Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy
11. Valse de Balfa - Linda Thompson
12. Two Step de Prairie Soileau - Cajun All-Star Band
13. Arrette Pas La Musique - Nick Lowe
14. Tout Un Beau Soir en me Promenant - Maria McKee
