Morrissey: [ Main ] | [ Videos ]
Eighteen singles, eighteen classics- that's pretty much what this disc offers. The Smiths were one of the greatest singles bands of all time, capable of creating striking and emotional songs that were full of pop hooks, well-placed experimental touches, and raw emotion. The singular combination of Johnny Marr's intricate, inescapable guitar lines and the wistful grace of Morrissey's is on full display here. "This Charming Man" is nothing less than the exact sound of falling in love, a stunning cascade of angelic guitar chords and quivering, spine-tingling vocals.
Tracks:
1. Hand in Glove
2. This Charming Man
3. What Difference Does It Make?
4. Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
5. William, It Was Really Nothing

8. That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore
9. The Boy With the Thorn in His Side

Morrissey
The former Smiths leader is aging well (musically, at least) and is writing as well as he ever has done during his solo career. His lyrics are still politically edgy, as witnessed in the Far Off Places sequence, "if your god bestows protection upon you, and if the U. S. A. doesn't bomb you". The setting for this video is utterly appropriate. What better way to celebrate his birthday than a return to adoring Manchester fans? I found the brief interview with a couple who had travelled from San Diego for the occasion particularly poignant.
