The Ultimate Collection

I totally agree with those reviewers who pegged this 1997 Motown release as a tad on the skimpy side for something passing itself off as an "ultimate" collection. I also have to wonder what Carol Friedman and David Irvin were thinking when they did the CD design.

The cover shot is fine, as are the photographs included with the insert [which contains 4 pages of liner notes by Steven Ivory, an LA-based music journalist, and a complete discography of the contents], but why would they include small, washed-blue print over black on the reverse to show the contents? Most of us who were fans of the group starting 33 years ago are not exactly blessed with 20-20 vision these days.

always have been a huge Lionel RIchie fan. His songwriting and overall impact speaks volumes. his vocals have alot of feeling as well. these songs are timeless and sound as good now as they did upon when they were first released. Lionel has so many great bridges in his songs and also a great sense and balance of Groove and Melody that compliment his strong Poetry as a Writer. very strong collection from a All Time Great Artist.

I bought this one at Best Buy on New movie Tuesday, and when I wanted to watch it, I found it had the very same 'no Left channel during the concert' problem many of you seem to be experiencing. So it's not limited to Amazon copies. Besides that, what a disappointment it was to hear him (from one channel) singing short, partial-mini-versions of our most favorite Lionel Richie Ballads! Why in the World would he do that to some of his biggest & most Loved hits? That's SHAMEFUL I SAY!

However, on the pro-side, the concert was mighty fine, and had some really great & funky (in the good way) moments.

... I'll admit it - I'm a fan of Lionel Richie's uptempo tracks and I wish he'd do more of them, because I've always despised most of his megahit ballads (although "Easy" is one of the greatest slow dancers of all-time)... but some of his very best are found here and here only (you won't find "Serves You Right", "Round And Round" or "Tell Me" on any compilations)... all you really need are this CD and "Can't Slow Down" before Lionel descended into self-parody with "Dancing On The Ceiling". Recommended if you can sit through the slow stuff.
