Talk Normal: A Laurie Anderson Anthology

"Difficult Music" is a track composed by Laurie Anderson to introduce one of her song / stories. It's also an excellent way to descibe a majority of her work. She has never been a pop artist. So it's misleading to think this collection is a "greatest hits" retrospective. Laurie Anderson, the performance artist from New York City, has very few tracks that received radio or video airplay. Even when singles were released like "O Superman" and "Sharkey's Day", they were hardly soaring up the charts. Yet she worthy of this release for changing the way we think of performance art today and music in general.

Something Wild: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack

Will someone, the director perhaps, ever revisit this soundtrack and properly flesh it out? There are about 50 songs in the movie, not to mention John Cale's and Laurie Anderson's contributions to the score. So much good music! One gem after another, I'm tellin ya! Wouldn't it be FUN if they created a comp with ALL the music on it?

I suppose I'll have to join the Download Generation and cobble it together myself.

It's worth noting that director Demme, on the commentary track for his EARLY feature "Crazy Mama", chuckles as he recalls how cheaply one could obtain song rights then, having obtained some well-known rock tunes for a pittance.

Philip Glass/Robert Wilson - the CIVIL warS, a tree is the best measured when it is down

I haven't really been a fan of Philip Glass before, but I have to admit that Civil WarS is a hugely enjoyable work. It opens with a mesmerizing, surging movement where dramatic, typically Glassian brass and arpeggio strings give way to floating, almost otherworldly vocal lines (mezzo-soprano, soprano and baritone). Scene A starts out as a mock battle march and develops from there, while scene B applies Glassian treatment to a spiritual-like theme overlaid by `war narratives' spoken by Robert E. Lee with singing responses from Mary Todd Lincoln.

You're Getting Better: The Word Jazz Dot Masters

How distinctive are Ken Nordine's original Word Jazz recordings? You haven't heard anything like them. To call it "spoken word" borders on slander; there is nothing precious, pompous, pretentious, or mannered about Word Jazz. The original albums from 1957-1960 have become hard or impossible to find. For many years they were my personal holy grail.

If you're considering picking up a Ken Nordine anthology you're probably familiar with his recordings. For the uninitiated suffice it to say that this would be an excellent place to start.
