Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman

While I am a Kurt Elling fan, I am also one of those who believe the night Johnnie Hartman and John Coltrane recorded their eponymous album was absolute magic that has yet to be duplicated or even approached by contemporary artists. Accordingly, I approached this project with considerable trepidation. My fears were misplaced--Elling and arranger Hobgood have created something different yet complimentary to those great jazz giants. The only interpretation that misses the mark in my opinion is " My one and only Love".

When the Heart Dances

Another heavy release from long-time Kurt Elling collaborator, pianist Laurence Hobgood, in duets with legendary bassist Charlie Haden, with Kurtish cameos. This disc will be a joy for anyone who has heard Laurence play - his trademark style is very much in evidence - sonorous standards, swashbuckling fast playing, comic interludes (check out the inebriated intro to New Orleans), and the sheer ability to make any piano resonate. The CD has a mixture of standards and originals. Some of the standards are priceless - a profound and Chopinesque version of Daydream dueting with Kurt, a measured tribute to Stairway to the Stars, and a langorous Cost of Living (written by the late Don Grolnick).

Legends of Jazz is an amazing work of artistry. Larry Rosen, thank you so much. Also, a big thanks to Bill Richert, the still photographer of the coffee table book. It is a wonderful addition to my library. You are very talented. I do hope to see more of your work in the future. As a former educator, my hat is off to all of you that put this great piece of work together. This is what our youth needs to view. Many thanks for the hours of entertainment I have enjoyed.

Live at MCG

It is impressive to notice that bigbands have still spread all over the USA after so many years even considering they do not hit the charts anymore.

Maybe one could say some charisma is missing when comparing the current bigbands with the late Count Basie or Stan Kenton but they still carry some charm.

Bob Mintzer is charming. Creative arrangements and good sax solos are his personal difference.
