The Sensual World

Four years after the successful masterwork "Hounds of Love", "The Sensual World" was finally released on Oct. 17, 1989. It reached #2 on the UK album chart, but left many fans less than impressed.

At the time, Kate Bush felt that it was her most personal and most honest album...which is reflected by most of the lyrics and subject matter. It is not as heavy on the Fairlight CMI as some of her previous records ("The Dreaming", "Hounds of Love"). Once again, Paddy Bush incorporates his foray of exotic and ancient instruments.

Golden Compass: Original Soundtrack

Science Fiction & Fantasy soundtracks tend to fall into a pile that all tend in the same direction: A magnificent overture setting the stage for the movie, a quiet tune to introduce the characters, and then a repeat of those same melodies throughout the remainder of the soundtrack, much of which covers various action sequences leaving the music boring without the video accompaniment. Desplat has avoided this downfall by implementing a wide variety of motifs throughout the soundtrack. Repetition is infrequent, the large scale orchestrations are solid, and the CD is thoroughly enjoyable on its own.

Face to Face

Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel were one of the few acts good enough to compete musically and visually with glam-era Bowie. After the latter's "Ziggy Stardust" triumph in 1972, many artists thought all they needed to do was wear make-up, nail polish, and platform boots. What they failed to take into account was that their music had to be as good as their look. Harley understood this, and chalked up hits right from the start.

As a former newspaper journalist, he seemed an unlikely candidate for pop stardom.
