Three times Grammy nominated British singer songwriter Joan Armatrading is the first female UK artist to have debuted at number 1 in the Billboards Blues charts. She is also the first female UK artist to be nominated for a Grammy in the blues category.

Joan Armatrading

This album floored me when I first heard it in the late 70's. Not only was her singing unusual, sultry and emotional but her guitar playing reminded me of What Jimi might have sounded like had he been a girl. Raw and aggresive at times and delicate and subtle at others. Mature and evolved songwriting coupled with the aforementioned talents (not to mention a bitchin' band!) made this quite an impressive recording.
