Here Lies Love (2CD)

'Here Lies Love' is a 22 song double-disc song cycle - improbably poignant, decidedly surreal, surprisingly thought provoking - about the rise and fall of the Philippines' notorious Imelda Marcos. It was conceived by David Byrne; composed by Byrne and British deejay/recording artist Fatboy Slim, a/k/a Norman Cook; and performed by a dream cast drawn from the worlds of indie rock, alt country, R&B and pop.
Byrne's taste in collaborators is as imaginative as it is impeccable, including Cyndi Lauper (who recounts, to lighthearted disco beats, Imelda's courtship with Ferdinand Marcos), Steve Earle (as the power-hungry Ferdinand), Dap-Kings vocalist Sharon Jones (recalling Imelda's introduction into New York society) and Natalie Merchant (as spurned Imelda confidante Estrella, anticipating the onset of martial law).

What can I say after watching this video? OMG. This is what the 80's were all about. David Byrne's opening number just starts the onslaught of what is to come to you visually as well as vocally. Mr. Demme is indeed brilliant at directing this very entertaining DVD of the Heads. I can laugh about their outfits now, but they were cool in the 80's I remember. I bought this video after reminiscing about the Heads, and recalled watching it back in the 80's when it was VHS. I just had to have this DVD as part of my collection.

Everything That Happens Will Happen Today

It's apparent from reading the reviews here there are many who still find Byrne and Eno relevant the way I view old-timers like Neil Young and Bob Dylan, but I'm not one of them. This release does nothing to make me change my mind. Luckily, I got my copy from the local library (don't you just love socialism!) so I'm not out $$, plus I don't have to try to like it to justify my decision to purchase. Sure, there are some nice sounding songs, but I doubt very few people will find them compelling enough to listen to this cd more than a couple times before relegating it to "dust-bin" status along with later-day Costello, REM and Bruce CD's (and probably too many Neil, as well).
