Eyes in the Sky: Eisenhower, the CIA and Cold War Aerial Espionage

There's no shortage of books about the Lockheed U-2. A couple of recent ones worth reading are "Spyplane: The U-2 History," by Norman Polmar, and "The U-2 Spyplane: Toward the Unknown: A New History of the Early Years," by Chris Pocock. Both of these concentrate on the development, technology and operations of the aircraft itself. "Eyes in the Sky" tells a different story. As such, is a very useful adjunct to the many U-2 books already on the market.

Mr. Brugioni was deeply involved in collecting, interpreting and exploiting overhead imagery in World War II and during the Cold War.

John S.D. Eisenhower is one of the best writers of military history because he can tell you what happened, why and how, without getting too judgmental about the events. Who was in the wrong is left up to the reader. Was the United States too greedy? Was Mexico too proud?
He gives us the facts, but in a form that makes it seem like a great military novel. Tons of maps, a complete index and the sequence of events in the back of the book all help to support his writing and make things even clearer.

The Hidden-Hand Presidency: Eisenhower as Leader

This was a path-breaking book when it first appeared more than twenty years ago, reflecting a rehabilitation of Dwight D. Eisenhower as president. It is an example of "revisionist history," something that should not be considered a negative term. Greenstein argued that the image of Eisenhower as an amiable "do-nothing" president who smiled and played golf while crises threatened to destroy the nation was incorrect. He worked hard behind the scenes while giving the appearance of inaction, and in most instances his indirect approach to leadership was highly effective.
