Steal This Album

I'm not a metal fan but I do like System of a Down simply because they're unique. This album really demonstrates what the aim of alternative metal is.

The first song called Chic'n'Stu really had me interested because of the comedy mixed in with the serious music. I really appreciated how the band used only the minimum amount of synth and desired a more raw sound. The Armenian influence is always present and is something I really like. Each song is unique and has its place. The songs Pictures and Streamline demonstrated some different fun rhythms.

Mezmerize

Great album, somewhat on the short side though (clocks in at around 35 min), highly original, if not a bit strange, sounds like nothing else you've ever heard, but sounds great

Hypnotize

I can't think of any other band that sounds like these guys. They are truly unique and although I don't like everything that they do, there is certainly a lot of talent to be found here. The music combines elements of Nu-metal, progressive rock, and Zappa-ish mayhem. Some of it is funny, some serious and some just plain over the top. Lead vocalist Serj Tankian has an almost operatic voice that is very different from anyone else I can think of out there. The band remind me a bit of The Mars Volta at times, although SOD's music is more blunt and to the point.
