In Rainbows

As most of my previous reviews would suggest, I normally am a listener to all forms of metal but Radiohead is, and has always been, one of those exquisite exceptions to the rule.

I've been listening since the mid 90's, have all their albums, and I can, with maybe only a second's hesitation, state that In Rainbows may very well be Radiohead's finest moment. Even over the epic OK Computer, you might ask. Yessir. What about Kid A? Again, yep. Surely not The Bends, that hallmark of alternative rock.

OK Computer

This Album is one of the best albums ever of any genre. Great music and a huge turning point for the band. You need to have it.

Kid A

"OK Computer" was the sound or technology and humanity colliding in Radiohead's world with astonishing results. Three years later, and humanity got the short end of the stick. "Kid A" threw away any previous alignment with traditional rock music and plunged head first into the world of Aphex Twin and Brian Eno. Since Thom Yorke has a generally dour view of the world as it is, the skittering beats and washes of sound tend to submerge instead of uplift. On the Scale of Ambition, "Kid A" rates a 10.

The Bends

While the first Radiohead album, Pablo Honey, was a decent go at the prevailing grunge sound of the time, The Bends was where Thom Yorke and company went from imitation to originality. Yorke's infatuation with modern alienation was focused and Jon Greenwood had fine tuned his guitar attacks into a voice that became unique to him and the band. More than any of their other albums, "The Bends" rocked hard and loud.

While the follow-up would find Yorke pushing his view more into the technology of alienation (and produce a masterwork in OK Computer), "The Bends" was still a human album.
