Steve McCurry just blew me out of my chair with his new book.

The book is unique in that its intended to be viewed sideways, each page have one picture sideways, the picture is not damaged by the center of the book in any way, the book is HUGE... wow, you are tempted to start tearing pages out and hang them on the wall.

Each image is a story, a reality, much more than the famous 1000 worth in a picture. the book is a experience.

The images is Steves typical clean compositions, rich colors and involved, photographed mostly with wide-angle lenses, Steve were THERE when he photographed these images, not from across the street, right in the middle of the image.

The head-shoulders format of the photographs keeps the viewer riveted to the faces, triggering, I believe, a deeper recognition that somehow the human species is all interconnected, we are all one, and that what we do to one, we do to all.
My plan for this book is to surround my social studies classroom with these powerful images, in the hopes that my students will better learn to see outside themselves, and will come to celebrate both our commonalities and our diversities.

This book has deeply affected my appreciation of the Afghan people and the landscape they inhabit. What immediately drew me to this book was the cover photo, the girl's beauty and youth are unpleasantly balanced by the look in her eyes that shows she has already seen to much cruelty in life. The other pictures are no less extraordinary showing people who lead rich lives though experiencing great suffering. The women, children and men who are photographed seem to have been chosen by McCurry to show the value and nobility of each human life.
