Martin Parr: Parrworld

Martin Parr's vast collections of photography books and postcards are world-renowned. Unbeknownst to many, he is also an obsessive collector of photographic and themed objects. In Parrworld: Objects and Postcards, a luscious two-volume set, his affinity for focused accumulation is presented with appropriate thoroughness, and with typical Parrian humor. Some of the items in the first volume, Objects, have already achieved notoriety--for instance, the wrist watches featuring Saddam Hussein's visage.

In the last chapter of this fascinating book author Val Williams says of Parr 'He is a cunning photographer, sidling his way into situations where he shouldn't always be, looking as ordinary as the people he photographs'. How true and this could well explain how he manages to take such interesting photos of people and situations.

This thick, chunky book gives a good cross selection of Parr's work, from the superbly observed black and whites of working class life in the seventies and eighties to the capturing, in color, of the middle classes in the nineties.

Martin Parr (b. 1952) is one of the best-known and most influential British photographers working today, acclaimed for his frank chronicling of life and society. This introductory monograph charts Parr's entire career including early black and white photographs, unpublished images made over the last five years, and works from all his major projects, including THE LAST RESORT and THINK OF ENGLAND. Parr is a prolific book-maker and collector, as well as a long-standing member of the Magnum photographic agency.

A quote from Rogelio Villarreal from the book's forward sums it up, as Parr's style is not new to anyone, and this book does not stray from his past iconic work that he is already well known for. The photos are very similar to past photo works like British Food, Think of England, and Common Sense, all done with a Mexican twist. Like his past works, there aren't many dull photos, as all offer very interesting close-ups and juxtapositions, making even the most trivial of everyday items and people seem camera worthy.
