Kids at Work: Lewis Hine and the Crusade Against Child Labor

by: Russell Freedman
This soft-cover book is written like a children's textbook, but Hine's photos look great all throughout. There are quite a few full-page prints, roughly 8x6 sized. I'm very satisfied with the purchase; only Aperture would print a book with better quality reproductions, and that's out of my price range right now.

American Photography and the American Dream (Cultural Studies of the United States)

by: James Guimond
James Guimond's powerful study reveals how documentary photographers have expressed or contested the idea of the American Dream throughout the twentieth century. In Guimond's formulation issues like growth, equality, and national identity came under the rubric of the Dream as it has been used to measure how well the nation is living up to its social and political ideals.

A pathbreaking book, American Photography and the American Dream examines the most important photographers and developments in the documentary genre during this century.

He documented the project from the ground up, going to great and dizzying lengths to get good shots of the work in progress. Today, Hine's amazing pictures constitute a priceless record of a memorable event in American history. 30 black-and-white photographs reproduced by four-color process.

"Pomegranate's books of postcards contain thirty top-quality reproductions bound together in a handy, artful collection.

America and Lewis Hine: Photographs, 1904-1940 (Aperture Monograph)

Review Summary: Lewis Hine was a pioneer in documenting the working conditions of children. His poignant images of coal mines, sweatshops, and factories shocked America into passing its first legislation to regulate and reduce child labor. Generations of Americans have benefited as a result. Review: The foreword by Walter Rosenblum describes Lewis Hine as being "a born teacher." Mr. Rosenblum recounts Mr. Hine's generosity in writing a letter or recommendation for him saying that Mr. Rosenblum was "a new and better Hine.
