I'm a big fan of the fashion stuff Bourdin shot in the seventies & eighties, especially his editorial work for French Vogue (there's never been a really good collection of this).
This book covers his career from the start to the early eighties but obviously not comprehensively given the size. While others may be interested in his earlier work (photos of Man Ray's studio etc.), I'm not. The latter half of the book gets into some of his later fashion photography that really made him famous, but only gives a taste of that part of his career.

This is a real shame for those who admire Bourdins work. There are images in this book which are new to me and I'm sure many fans but they have run them across the folds so that its impossible to really view them. The essay is thoughtful and well done but what a pity the photographs were not respected by the designers of this small volume.

Guy Bourdin: A Message For You

This book (or books, since it is 2 volumes together) consists mainly of Bourdin's photos of Nicolle Meyer, taken between 1977 and 1980.

Volume I has 75 color photos, and each one has its own page. Each photo is only about half the size of the page, but having said that, none of them seem too small. They all seem about the right size and fit well with the feel of the book. Almost every photo contains Nicolle in one form or another, which is definitely not a bad thing, because she is a beautiful woman and a great subject.

Guy Bourdin (1928-1991) created the most challenging fashion photography of the late 20th century. Over a 35-year career, including more than three decades creating confrontational images for French Vogue and groundbreaking campaigns for Charles Jourdan footwear, he staged complex dramas, with every gesture and prop carrying a potent psychological charge. He showed us that in the context of fashion it is rarely the product that compels us; it is the image--the seductive narratives of the commercial world, and the quest for the unattainable--that stirs our desires.
