There are people, (mostly in New York) who resent photography, confusing it with the blurry, out of focus vacation pictures of the non-technical.
Now I think that art is whatever will sell on 68th street and that Edward Weston was an artist of the highest ranks of people who use a medium to create what they see or feel, in short, art of merit. Production of the volume is good, the comments not too oprobrious and we ar left Edwrd Weston an his models. The book is to be cherished and not left on a coffee table to impress your lumpen friends.

Edward Weston: The Form of the Nude (Monographs)

Amy Conger has produced a beautiful collection of Weston's photos, selected form about 25 years of his work. As the title suggests, most of these are wonderful figure studies. The remaining few are still-lifes or landscapes. Many of these, like the shells p.48, pepper p.69, or radish p.74 present the same curves and compositions as his nudes.

In part, these help to bring out a geometric contrast that seemed to fascinate Weston: the merger of flowing curves of figure with harsher, angular geometries.

We take it for granted now: the ability of a photograph to go past the 'whatisit'stage and to celebrate pure form. This is so much a part of our world that it has become a staple in advertising and a cliche in photos of the nude.
So it's easy to forget that formalism was once a radical idea that steered photography away from pictorialism and into a truly modern sensibility. It's also easy to forget that it's not easy to carry off a true celebration of form: it requires technique so perfect that it disappears.

In Focus: Edward Weston: Photographs From the J. Paul Getty Museum

The Getty Museum has been putting out this series of booklets, each on a noted artist or photographer. This item shows many photographs taken, or perhaps more fittingly, composed by Edward Weston. The Getty had amassed originals of many of his best works, only some of which are reproduced here. They were made from 1900-50. Some have a timeless quality. Often imbued with a deliberate haziness in the background.

The text that accompanies the photos provides a short biography of Weston's life, and a context to the photos.
