Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph

It is not overstating the case to say that creating these photographs cost Diane Arbus her life, her suicide followed soon after they were assembled. When you study them, (and you study them, you don't look at them), you quickly understand why. Arbus was a brittle and emotionally volatile woman long before taking these haunting images, the product of a privileged upbringing who cut her teeth in the world of fashion photography, making perfect-looking people look even more perfect. Having refined her technical skills she ventured into the opposite side of that world, seeking out the people society hid and desperately tried to forget.

Diane Arbus: A Biography

I can't say I really liked this book. In the early stages of the biography I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Diane's childhood, but the author does too much fawning over Diane and repeatedly talks about how gifted she was. Yes, I think we all appreciate that fact, now let's move on and get to the core of who she was. ...Except I don't necessarily feel that this book ever truly did that. There were some interesting insights, but I constantly felt far too removed from the real Diane. Each piece of information I felt I could really sink my teeth into was buried between pages and pages of repetitive or useless (to me, anyway) information.

To be honest, I am not a major fan of Arbus. However I have read two other books by Gibson and was taken by the clean writing and the way he ties things together. Well, it turned out to be not about her, but about a book collector who developed a fixation with collecting and with the posthumous papers and photos of the well-regarded photographer of unusual people. It is also about the workings of the art world, high-end auction houses, and the collectors who feed material into art commerce.
There are also some interesting and cogent sections on certain parts of american culture, for example, the dime freak shows that employed Arbus' subjects and the urban folk culture of the 60's.
