Since th eearly 1980x, Bettina Rheims has been the most sought-after French photographer. From her very beginnings, the female body has been the central focus of her work. Her unusual and provocative portraits and nude images each reveal a hidden part of the subject. She regularly caused stirs with projects such as Chambre close (1992), the story of a Paris voyeur watching women in hotels; KIM, a docuemntary ona transsexual,; I.N. R.I (1999), a sequence on the life of Chris, Shanghai (2004), featuring women in the midst of a powerful cultural,e conomic and spiritual evolution, and, most recently, Heroines (2006).

Seeing Bettina Rheims' first collection of color photos was as revelatory as seeing those of Helmut Newton in 'White Women' some 30 years ago (my Italian wife was so infuriated by his work that she tore the dust jacket in half the instant she saw it). I would hardly call Ms. Rheims' new collection erotic in the same way. Her work seems much less obvious; most of the work tends toward the vaguely suggestive, in the sense of stimulating one's imagination without stirring one in other ways, rather like viewing Titian's many varieties of Venus, rather than the concupiescient versions of Cranach, but it is similarly artificial inasmuch as it appears to be the result of careful planning and posing, if not editing, with a few possible exceptions.
Starting in 1979 with Female Trouble and going all the way to 2002 with Shanghai, this softcover retrospective covers twelve different periods and bodies of work from Ms. Rheims. Born in Paris in 1952, Bettina gained fame with the publication of her nude photos of stripper in 1980 in the exhibition called Egoïste. From there she went on work with numerous high profile magazines and publishers and became well known for her work with celebrities. But through it all she retained her original focus on photography as an artistic medium.
