August Sander: [ Main ] | [ Videos ]

I can't say that I know a whole lot about photography, but I'd heard that August Sander was a pioneer in portrait photographs and so I decided to pick up this set. It's a little on the expensive side and I wish the pictures took up the whole page, but the pages are thick and glossy and the quality of the prints is good.
The information in the beginning of the books is sparse--it will tide you over until you research Sander on your own, but it's not definitive by any means.
What I liked most about this set is that it includes such a wide chronology of this artist's work, and you can really feel a progression of this artist as his subjects become more detailed, more interesting, more vibrant.
by: August Sander, Alfred Doblin
Containing 60 plates of portraits by August Sander, this book is a find for anyone looking to own a profound body of work. First published in 1929, Face of Our Time depicts life in Germany from 1905 to 1928. It's merely a glimpse into Sander's larger work titled People of the 20th Century, which is said to hold an archive of 40,000 photographs.
Making photographs in Germany during a time when National Socialism was being implemented, Sander continued to document all walks of life and types of people.
by: August Sander
The long life of German photographer August Sander (1876-1964) spanned one of the most turbulent eras in his country's history. The Great War of 1914-1918, the Weimar Republic, the reign of National Socialism, and the horrors of World War II all left an indelible imprint on both the man and his work. Sander, a conventional studio portraitist who transformed himself into an avant-gardist, exemplified the complex and sometimes contradictory nature of his time. He was at once innovative and deeply wedded to the past, blending a progressive vision with a traditional view of society and his craft.
The book was delivered faster than expected. A couple of things could have been mentioned in the seller's product description. The book smelled very mildewy and the dampness caused the cover to warp quite a bit. I suspect it was stored in a basement for some time.
