August Sander: People of the 20th Century (7 Volume Set)

I can't say that I know a whole lot about photography, but I'd heard that August Sander was a pioneer in portrait photographs and so I decided to pick up this set. It's a little on the expensive side and I wish the pictures took up the whole page, but the pages are thick and glossy and the quality of the prints is good.

The information in the beginning of the books is sparse--it will tide you over until you research Sander on your own, but it's not definitive by any means.

What I liked most about this set is that it includes such a wide chronology of this artist's work, and you can really feel a progression of this artist as his subjects become more detailed, more interesting, more vibrant.

August Sander is considered to be one of the greatest portrait photographers of the early 20th century. His great photographic work will be celebrated by an exhibition of his most important
vintage prints opening on September 7, 2009, at the distinguished Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson
in Paris. One half of the images are his famous portraits, the other half are his relatively unknown, but very beautiful Rhineland landscapes and nature photographs from the 1930s.
The images will be accompanied by a text by August Sander himself his famous radio speech about photography entitled Sehen, Beobachten und Denken .

August Sander: Face Our Time (Schirmer Visual Library)

Containing 60 plates of portraits by August Sander, this book is a find for anyone looking to own a profound body of work. First published in 1929, Face of Our Time depicts life in Germany from 1905 to 1928. It's merely a glimpse into Sander's larger work titled People of the 20th Century, which is said to hold an archive of 40,000 photographs.
Making photographs in Germany during a time when National Socialism was being implemented, Sander continued to document all walks of life and types of people.
