Industrial America, 1940-1960: 173 Photographs (Dover Photography Collections)

Though it came out in 1981 it's fortunate that this Dover book is still available. The 173 black and white photos reveal what a stunning photographer Andreas Feininger was. The contents are assignments from the Office of War Information in the early Forties and Life Magazine where he was a staff photographer for nineteen years from 1943.

These are photos that work, no wastage, crazy angles, out of focus moody shots but photos that tell a story to everybody. Feininger's technical expertise in photography clearly helped.

Andreas Feininger: That's Photography (Hatje Cantz)

As a record of the work of Andreas Feininger this has to be the book to own. With just over two hundred photos I doubt there will be anything better published. The 320 pages show his work from 1930 to the mid-Eighties with, I thought, a really first-class selection of photos.

European work from the Thirties includes: architecture; figure studies and portraits, then from the Forties onwards, when he was in America, work for the Office of War Information and Life magazine assignments of the Californian oil industry (those famous Signal Hill oil derricks) and probably the best from Feininger's sixty-year love affair with Manhattan.

Andreas Feininger

Born in France, the son of renowned artist Lyonel Feininger, Andreas Feininger was educated as an architect in Germany before he became a photographer. After working in Sweden, he came to the United States and in 1943, became a staff photographer at LIFE magazine, where he spent the next twenty years. He is best known for iconographic images of his adopted land, with a focus on powerful cityscapes, which are imbued with the strict sense of form and proportion developed during his architectural studies.
