Blues Walkin' Like a Man: A Tribute To Son House

I first her Rory Block play "Government Fleet Blues" on Sirius the other day and was blown away so I had to make it a point to pickup this CD - it's truly amazing. Block evidently went to great lengths to capture the sound, the spirit, and the emotion of the work of Son House. My favorite track is "Preachin' Blues" - the slide work, string slapping, and plucking, are unbelievable - I would have thought Son himself was playing and Block was singing along!

I didn't care for the arrangement of "Dry Spell Blues" being that the entire recording is played from a purist perspective and this track has a backup choir which is why I dinged this release one star, in fairness I would have dinged only a 1/3 of a star but the feature isn't available.

Heroes of the Blues: The Very Best of Son House

Son House taught Robert Johnson the slide blues. Son House taught Muddy Waters. When Son House started performing at Blues festivals again in the mid 1960s, some of Muddy's younger band members would start to go off for a smoke or whatever when the old man came on stage. Muddy wouldn't let them. Muddy Waters would tell all his band members to be quiet and pay attention when the man played because even compared with Muddy, this was the real deal.

Rediscovered in Rochester, New York, relearning to play the guitar, (how this country abuses the masters that come from its people, particularly its Black people), put back on the stage by the folk revival's blues section, House made recordings that reproduced his old masterpies, with a wrier sense of meaning than before.

Son House & the Great Delta Blues Singers

If you're interested in the blues roots of rock, you've come to the right place. Son House laid down tracks that have echoed down to this day, and he may have been the first true wellspring of what became rock. I've been a listener and collector of what's now called classic rock for more than 40 years, and I have never found an earlier or truer original source than Son House. With all the fuss being bestowed on Robert Johnson these days, here's a clue: Son House taught RJ how to play! Listen to this album and hear the foreshadowings of ALL the great music to come.

I have reviewed the music of country blues legend Son House elsewhere in this space and expected to review this documentary solely on the basis of a comment there. I mentioned there that in 1963 Son House, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt performed at the Newport Folk Festival, a historic Delta blues occasion. One of the vivid cinematic scenes from that event was Son House flailing his National steel guitar, trancelike, on the classic Dead Letter Blues. I assumed that I was going to see that performance here.
