The Jazz Giants '56

Lester Young was the kind of rare musician that could convey an entire world of emotion in just a couple of phrases and I fell in love with this CD the moment I heard the beginning of "I guess I'll have to change my plan". My growing Jazz CD collection numbers in the dozens now but this is one CD I always keep going back to.

Drummer Man (Verve)

This is a fantastic session done for Verve Records in 1956 of Gene with an all-star studio orchestra featuring Roy Eldridge and Anita O'Day. The album recaptures some of Krupa's greatest hits in glorious hi-fi sound. I think drummers suffered the most from the poor recording technology of the thirties and forties, and it is to the credit of producers like Norman Granz that veterans of the Swing Era like Krupa were able to re-record their hits in living stereo sound. This album captures everything that made Krupa a legend.

Swinging music with a great band..The greatness of Gene Krupa's Orchestra with Roy Eldrige intact remains a staple of jazz history as UPTOWN remains one of the defining songs of the genre,, I was able to locate a CD copy consoling myself with Anita O Day's Sony's collection...also a great one..Still, the sound is fine and a real treat of a CD with many tracks obviously not on O'Days collection since this Cd is a composite long playing Cd that spans about 10 years..It is considered a big band classic featuring Krupa and Eldridge,and the gutsy voiced Anita O'Day.
