Off With Their Heads

Simply put, the third album from the Kaiser Chiefs is their best yet. Their working class Brit sensibility reaches a peak on the second song, the irrepressible "Never Miss a Beat." Storming across on an unforgettable hook, it's a yarn about the disaffected that cuts both ways. You can dance the heck out of it, which is what great pop does, yet the KC's sing about the lazy sods that think "It's cool to know nothing." Its as good a single as their original calling card, "I Predict a Riot."

Mark Ronson is talented beyond his years and this album shows that he is more than someone who can tip a hat to the 60s. He has assembled a high-talent roster, but even if he didn't coax great, apt performances from Lily Allen, Santo Gold, Robbie Williams and the Daptone Horns (among others), he still would be dishing up hot, catchy tracks that transcend pop appeal. He knows how to masterfully manipulate the music and get vital sounds from his musicians. This is a great album!

Oh, and if you like what he did with "Toxic" check out a different but equally cool version on the Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra effort on "Hits the Hits" which is also a unique take on pop songs.

Mark Ronson Presents - Man in the Mirror

2009 release. Not an album, and not a mixtape, but a 'dedication album', this is Chicago's Rhymefest using elements from Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5's back catalogue, with production and direction from Mark Ronson. Think Grey Album but with less Paul and Ringo and more Tito and Jermaine. The result is plenty of dope tracks, plus some skits that are genuinely funny (unlike 99% of Hip Hop album skits) and already a big buzz building for Rhymefest's full-length album El Che. Contributions from Ghostface, Mary J Blige, Camp Lo and Dres from Black Sheep add the polish to what is a refreshing breath of creativity in the often stale Hip Hop game, and a fitting tribute to the Jackson legacy! Not to be missed! 24 tracks.
