Moody 4A

Moody 4A is James Moody and Kenny Barron at their swinging best. This new disc features legendary jazz pianist Kenny Barron in a beautifully relaxed, swinging, classic session. Moody has never sounded better! Whether James Moody is playing the soprano, alto, or tenor saxophone, he does so with deep resonance and wit. This jazz great has a healthy respect for tradition but takes delight in discovering new musical paths, which makes him one of the most consistently expressive and enduring figures in modern jazz today.

Our Delight

We venerate wealth and power but cursorily dismiss art. We would do well to heed the poet Shelley who, in "The Defense of Poetry," calls artists the unacknowledged legislators of the world, the only true lawmakers, the cartographers of the human heart, of all that is beautiful, lasting, immortal: they are the hierophants who take us out of the present moment, revealing past and future while making us aware of what it means to be truly free. They embody James Baldwin's message in "Sonny's Blues," a living mirror to each of us reflecting us to ourselves, revealing the creative potential that is the birthright of every human child.

Live at the Royal Festival Hall, London

This was a very disappointing CD on several counts: 1) The recording was very weak--equivalent to an AM broadcast: 2) The All-World band seemed to sleep-walk their way through an unispiring performance; and 3) Arturo Sandoval (the reason I purchased the CD in the first place) had a very minor role and his brilliance could not save this boring self-indugent effort on the part of the band. The only thing worse than purchasing this CD would be to have been in Royal festival Hall on that fateful night.

Ray Brown. The Man. Complete Recordings 1946-1959

Ray Brown had not reached his 19th birthday when he arrived in New York in 1945 and made an immediate impact as a member of the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet. The following year he was part of the memorable Gillespie big band that included James Moody, John Lewis, and Kenny Clarke. More or less simultaneously, Brown and the late Oscar Pettiford became the first significant representatives of the bass in the bebop revolution s first generation. The second stage of his career as a nationally known artist lasted from 1948 to 1951, when his own trio accompanied Ella Fitzgerald (then Mrs.
