Ah Um 50th Anniversary (Legacy Edition)

Two discs 77 and 74 minutes each approximately. The sound is extraordinarily good,with open spaces between the instruments,which are crisp and clean. In addition,Mingus' voice can be heard very clearly (he sometimes shouts a bit when playing) in this music. The booklet has notes written by Michael Cuscuna. There is a track-by-track explanation,which gives much insight into this great music. Also included are quite a few nice photographs of the group in the studio. There is also a PDF file that can be accessed for more insight into this album.

"Charles Mingus: Live in '64" is one of the strongest entries yet in Naxos' superb Jazz Icons DVD collection. The series features historical concert footage recorded by far-sighted European television stations of some of the biggest names in jazz history. Mingus--certainly one of the four or five most important jazz creators--is captured during his 1964 concert tour in Belgium, Norway and Sweden working with what was arguably his greatest band ever. Multi-reedman Eric Dolphy, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, trumpeter Johnny Coles, pianist Jaki Byard and drummer Dannie Richmond were intuitive and brilliant interpreters of Mingus' unique music, which synthesized blues, gospel, bop, New Orleans traditional and early '60s modernism.

Charles Mingus made some of jazz's most complex music--listen to Black Saint and Sinner Lady or the two Changes albums--but loved blues and gospal. When he returned to roots, the roots were unadulerated. This CD is proof.

"Wendsday Night Prayer Meeting" and "Prayer For Passive Resistance" are unapologetic twelve bar blues. Both showcase call and response shouting and playing Mingus heard as a church boy. This concert was in 1960, but could have been in a 1932 Baptist chapel

Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus

Charles Mingus - truly one of a kind...This album is one of his best as far as improvisation goes..Eric Dolphy and Ted Curson are on fire! Mingus also delivers some inspired playing..and the general sound of the group is very free..which contrasts nicely with Mingus' airtight compositional style. I would also like to recommend his album titled 'Mingus' also on the candid label (in fact all of Mingus' work during this period is phenomenal).
