Bruce Hornsby music

The Way It Is

Already an accomplished musician and songwriter, Bruce Hornsby released his debut "The Way It Is" with his band The Range at age 32 in 1986. Earning top 40 hits and Grammy recognition, its impact was immediate. A Virginia native, Hornsby presented a unique, distinguished sound, identifiable by his remarkable, whimsical piano playing. Both a brilliant songwriter and vocalist in addition to his keyboard prowess, Hornsby employs some '80s production elements in synthesizers and electronica, as well as some distinctly southern musicianship by the ever-underrated Range.

Levitate

Bruce Hornsby's new album opens with a boisterous bit of fiddle-inflected folk-rock called "The Black Rats of London." The song's subject matter is the little known role played by rodents, bugs and microbes in shaping some of our nation's most important historical events.

"I wrote that out of a National Geographic article that I was reading about Jamestown," he told me in a recent telephone conversation. "This was quite a revelation to me about how the redcoats got sick in Yorktown, and it helped the Americans, the bluecoats, defeat them.

Rambling Boy

Charlie Hayden, family and friends combine to give us the kind of music Charlie was raised on by many of the best entertainers in the business. The musical performances were solid and fun for listener and performer alike. Charlie and his parents started at KMA Radio in Shenandoah, Iowa, and how fitting the album ends with Charlie singing "Shenandoah." I love it and recommend it.

A Night on the Town

If you like sad songs I highly recommend this album just for the duet with Shawn Colvin, "Lost Soul". The way her voice winds through it just made the hair on my arms, (not to mention my back) stand on end. Of course the rest of the album features tasty guitar and piano licks as well as an impressive group of guest artists who make for my favorite Range album. Still love listening to it to this day.I give it two thumbs and two big-toes up.
