Bix Beiderbecke, Vol. 1: Singin' the Blues

In addition to being among the most influential and beautiful jazz sides ever recorded, the original Okeh 78s were exceptionally well-recorded for their day, as any collector lucky enough to own one will tell you. Digital remastering was in its early days when Columbia issued this and its companion Bix disc, and it shows; the sound is flat, with the brilliance of the highs all but gone. It's shameful that Sony/BMG, which now owns nearly EVERYTHING Bix recorded, including the Columbia and Victor Whiteman sides, has not done justice to Bix by releasing the beautiful boxed set that collectors worldwide would welcome.

Bix Beiderbecke, Vol. 2: At the Jazz Band Ball

I have been a big Bix fan for many years, and was delighted when I purchased this CD. Bix, in my opinion, was the best jazz cornetist of all time, and ranks as my favorite jazz musician. The tone he was able to achieve on his cornet just floors me every time I listen to his records. This collection does a good job of bringing together some of his best recordings along with his rarest, and several tracks he might not even have played on! (I think most have agreed that Bix was NOT on the Lou Raderman sides).

The Art of Bix Beiderbecke

Of great interest are a few tracks by a very young Bing Crosby, with the great Bix backing him they sound as good as they probably did 80 and some odd years ago, my favorite "there is no sweet man that's worth the salt of my tears", cd a must for fans of early jazz sounds.

Dixieland Jazz

Dixieland Jazz is a ten CD box set of 200 recordings by various artists recorded mostly in the 1920s and issued by Membran in a sturdy cardboard box which,as is traditional for these sets, has no liner notes. no personnel and no recording dates.

Each of the ten CDs is encased in a sturdy cardbard sleeve with the titles, the artists and the times correctly printed on the sleeve. In this case, at least, there are quite a few tracks that are unfamiliar to me and some liner notes with a bit more explanation for these 200 tracks would have been very helpful.
