Billy Cobham - Culturemix: New Morning Paris Concert

Billy Cobham
Right from the top let me say that I agree completely with the other reviews here - this is a very good concert, good quality dvd and I am glad to have it in my collection. Now saying that let me mention 2 points that to me distract a bit from the show and that I would have liked to have known about before I purchased mine. First there is a extra percussion player in the band who plays steel pan(as listed on the dvd) or steel drum as I think of it...to my ears the steel drum sound is very out of place here and does not always mesh well with the other instruments.

Rudiments: The Billy Cobham Anthology

For those of you who invested in either the domestic or import remastered "Spectrum" CD, well, get ready to lay down some more shekels. The "Spectrum" tracks on this Anthology have been spun again and sound slightly better. The bottom end is approximately the same, but there is definitively more "air" in the recordings from this new mastering, especially in the symbols (which are now VERY bright and upfront).

In addition to the spiffier audio, there is a very well-written booklet which contains, in addition to historical & interesting anecdotal info, Cobham's own comments and recollections of each track on this set.

Tracks:
    1. Quadrant 4
    2. Stratus
    3. Anxiety/Taurian Matador
    4. Snoopy's Search/Red Baron
    5. All 4 One (outtake)
    6. The Pleasant Pheasant
    7. Spanish Moss
    8. Flash Flood
    9. Solarization
    10. Lunarputians
    11. Moon Germs
    12. Total Eclipse
    13. Shabazz
    14. Some Skunk Funk
    15. A Funky Thide Of Sings

"LIVE" on Tour in Europe

We're all well aware of Billy Cobham's talents but this serves at presenting George Duke in his ecclectic pre-Reach For It" stage-the only CD evidance taht I know of."Hip Pockets" and
the John Scofield guitar-whipped "Ivory Towers" make a powerful
starter while the avante-garde synthesizer racket on Duke's own
"Frankstein Goes To The Disco puts the artists current preoccuptaion with bland commercial pop to shame! Not to be ignored is the Sun-Ra-sih rap of "Space Lady"-it's Billy Cobham all over but a whole other side of George Duke, one that we don't see too often these days.

Tracks:
    1. Hip Pockets - Billy Cobham, Cobham, Billy
    2. Ivory Tattoo - Billy Cobham, Scofield, John
    3. Space Lady - Billy Cobham, Duke, George
    4. Almustafa the Beloved - Billy Cobham, Johnson, Alfonso
    5. Do What Cha Wanna - Billy Cobham, Duke, George
    6. Frankenstein Goes to the Disco - Billy Cobham, Cobham, Billy
    7. Sweet Wine - Billy Cobham, Cobham, Billy
    8. Juicy - Billy Cobham, Duke, George

Power, Passion & Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra

by: Walter Kolosky
I came late to knowing about the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but better late than never! And I continue to enjoy John McGlaughlin's cosmic creations, be they purely musical (Floating Point), educational (This is How I Do It), or both (Meeting of the Minds). This book provided me with an essential grounding in the reality of the human events that precipitated, sustained, and ultimately fragmented "The Greatest Band That Ever Was."

I believe that the book gives both a good account of the band and their direction, as well as an important account of how the music industry failed so comprehensively to understand, promote, or ultimately support this truly creative team as they wrote a significant chapter of modern music.
