Further Definitions

Alto saxophonist Benny Carter is a legend in the same cannon as Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins. "Further Definitions" features a "big band" sound of sorts. It features the following lineup:

Benny Carter -- alto saxophone
Phil Woods -- alto saxophone (1-8) .

    1. Honeysuckle Rose

B.B.B. & Co.

Wow. This album is terrific. Two of the greatest saxophonists of all time, Benny Carter and Ben Webster, jam with clarinet great Barney Bigard in one of the best swing jazz albums ever made, with a magnificent rhythm section comprising Jimmy Rowles on piano, Dave Barbour on guitar, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. (Trumpeter Shorty Sherock joins in on a couple of tracks.) Amazingly tight and lyrical playing from everybody. The soloists' rich tones and elegant phrasings complement one another beautifully.

Titles:
    1. Opening Blues
    2. Lula
    3. When Lights Are Low
    4. You Can't Tell the Difference
    5. When the Sun Goes Down Blues

Live and Well in Japan

Recorded live at Kosei Nenkin Hall in Tokyo, Japan in April 1977, this is yet another CD I bought for just the one track even though I had previously vowed I would never do it again. This time it was for "Tribute to Louis Armstrong" and it's another song I've had on cassette since my college days back in the 80s.

And again I struck it lucky as the rest of the album is very good. It's a truly beautiful mix of jazz, swing and blues. Carter plays alto saxophone and trumpet, Budd Johnson plays tenor and soprano saxophones, Cecil Payne plays baritone saxophone, Britt Woodman plays trombone, Cat Anderson and Joe Newman play trumpet, Nat Pierce is on the piano, Mundell Lowe on guitar, George Duvivier on bass and Harold Jones on the drums.

Titles:
    1. Squatty Roo
    2. Tribute to Louis Armstrong: When It's Sleepy Time Down South/Confe ...
    3. Them There Eyes
    4. It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)
