Further Definitions

Since other comments gave more or less my opinion of this two-in-one CD, let me just add in my mother tongue da je rijec o jednom od najljepsih i najelegantnijih primjera "mejnstrim" jazza sto sam ih u zadnje vrijeme èuo...
Carter je, naravno, sasvim na visini, a s obzirom na sjajnu ekipu oko njega (Hawk, Monkov omiljeni suradnik Charlie Rouse, bubnjar Jo Jones, jos jedan veliki altist Phil Woods...) nije ni èudno da tako dobar aranzer i sviraè ostvari sjajne snimke.

Drugi album s ovog CD-a (dakle, druga polovica CD-a), "Additions to further definitions", s Budom Shankom, Teddyjem Edwardsom, Rayom Brownom i drugima tek je nesto manje dojmljiv.

Tracks:
    1. Honeysuckle Rose - Benny Carter, Razaf, Andy
    2. The Midnight Sun Will Never Set - Benny Carter, Jones, Quincy
    3. Crazy Rhythm - Benny Carter, Caesar, Irving
    4. Blue Star
    5. Cotton Tail - Benny Carter, Ellington, Duke
    6. Body and Soul - Benny Carter, Eyton, Frank
    7. Cherry - Benny Carter, Redman, Don
    8. Doozy
    9. Fantastic, That's You - Benny Carter, Cates, George
    10. Come on Back
    11. We Were in Love
    12. If Dreams Come True - Benny Carter, Sampson, Edgar
    13. Prohibido
    14. Doozy
    15. Rock Bottom
    16. Titmouse

Billy Eckstine Sings with Benny Carter

This is a splendid CD. I was generally ambivalent about Eckstine, finding him a bit more pop and less blues than is my taste. But on these, his last recordings, I find his seasoned, quivering voice to be textured and alluring. Authenticity and feeling have supplanted performance (much like the last Billie Holiday recordings, but without the audible evidence of imminent collapse). The two duets with Helen Merrill are touching. Of the many recordings of My Funny Valentine, the dark one here may be my favorite.

Tracks:
    1. You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To
    2. My Funny Valentine
    3. Here's That Rainy Day
    4. Summertime
    5. Kiss from You
    6. Memories of You
    7. I've Got the World on a String
    8. Now That I Need You
    9. Over the Rainbow
    10. September Song
    11. Autumn Leaves
    12. Didn't We

The Benny Carter Sessions

Sarah Vaughan is my favorite jazz vocalist. I like Ella Fitzgerald, but I like her best when she is singing slow, moody tunes. I can listen to Sarah any time and any place. She brings the goods!

This cd is from her later years and she doesn't use vocal acrobatics all of the time, like most young vocalist do, she knows her instrument and takes the tricks out of her bag when the feeling hits. You've got to hear her do the "Trolley "song. I don't want to compare her and Judy Garland, because I like them both, but you've got to hear it.

Tracks:
    1. I Believe in You - Sarah Vaughan, Loesser, Frank
    2. Honeysuckle Rose - Sarah Vaughan, Razaf, Andy
    3. Moonlight on the Ganges - Sarah Vaughan, Myers, Sherman
    4. The Lady's in Love With You - Sarah Vaughan, Lane, Burton
    5. After You've Gone - Sarah Vaughan, Creamer, Henry
    6. A Garden in the Rain - Sarah Vaughan, Dyrenforth, James
    7. I Can't Give You Anything But Love - Sarah Vaughan, Fields, Dorothy
    8. The Trolley Song - Sarah Vaughan, Blane, Ralph
    9. I'm Gonna Live Until I Die - Sarah Vaughan, Curtis, M.P.
    10. Falling in Love With Love - Sarah Vaughan, Hart, Lorenz
    11. Great Day - Sarah Vaughan, Eliscu, Edward
    12. Nobody Else But Me - Sarah Vaughan, Hammerstein, Oscar
    13. Lonely Hours - Sarah Vaughan, Glaser, Hy
    14. I'll Never Be the Same - Sarah Vaughan, Kahn, Gus
    15. If I Had You - Sarah Vaughan, Berlin, Irving

Norman Granz Jazz In Montreux Presents Benny Carter '77

Benny Carter
This is another in the amazing series of Norman Granz concerts from the 1970's, which have been released on DVD. Benny Carter was a Jazz giant who was still playing until the age of 90. Here in 1977 (only 70 at the time!) he is captured at Montreux in great form.

He plays a set which consists mainly of standards:
Three Little Words
In a Mellow Tone
Wave
Undecided
Body & Soul
On Green Dolphin Street
Here's That Rainy day

As well as Jimmie Smith on drums, Neils Pederson is on Bass and Ray Bryant is on Piano.
