Once Upon a Time in the West

This is probably one of the very greatest films of all time. It is grand on visuals, it is grand on action, it is grand on music and most importantly, it is grand on story.

Many times I have walked right by this gem of a film in the store. I have picked it up then put it back fearing that it would be a waste of money, as I have never heard of this title nor seen any previews or heard the name Sergio Leone before, although I have been watching The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly for years.

As a film aspirant, I throw myself whole heartedly into a film and try to find the greatest qualities in all of its aspects ie. storytelling, camera, characters and acting, music, costumes and the works. I even stay through the credits...
After hearing so much about this film I finally watched it and was left at a loss. The story is good, as is the acting, characters and everything else I mentioned above. It suffers from the feel that Master Sergio Leones hand was not behind every shot. On watching the extras the mystery was solved.

Sergio Leone pretty much re-invented the western with A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, and in the process breathed new life into a near-dead genre, and Eastwood made a squint-eyed, taciturn anti-hero into an icon. The highly ritualized gunfights, and violence are as orchestrated as any ballet, and are set to an unforgettable Ennio Morricone score. A must have for Eastwood, or western fans.

Except for "The Good, Bad & Ugly" this is another of my favorite movies. I wanted the special edition to learn more about Sergio Leone. Shorter featurettes (than GD&B) but still enlightning. I finally noticed after viewing both films that many of the costars are in both features, they just play different roles. Great print, clear pictures that only Leone can pull off (closeups supreme!). This was Lee Van Cleef's first starring role and he appears as if he has always starred in westerns (always played bit parts prior to this).
