Good solid movie ! We've watched this at least two times a year for the last decade or so. Not too slap stick, not too depressing. Grim, funny, lovely, real. Jack Lemmon at his best. Shirley MacLaine sweet, tragic, tough, lost. Might even be a happy ending lurking there but is it ?

Love in the Afternoon

Ok, I'll be the first to admit I like this movie, as I'm a fan of Billy Wilder, Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper, and of course Maurice Chevalier, and classic movies in general. The age difference between the two main characters doesn't bother me, I guess being a lover of classic movies I'm so used to it, but even in "real life" I don't see that as a necessary hindrance. What is disturbing is the fact that this guy is an admitted adulterer and fornicator who is so heartless that he almost caused one woman to commit suicide and who has no conscience whatsoever apparently, sees a pretty young, untouched thing who is attracted to him because of the very things she should be repelled by, plays hard to get and lies to him about supposed sexual conquests that if were true would be equally disgusting as his escapades, and he "falls in love" with her after several meetings (with a space of some months inbetween) to the point of marrying her and her otherwise doting father is somehow happy with the turn of events.

The documentary included as a bonus feature on this double-disc edition of "Double Indemnity" suggests this 1944 Oscar nominee for best picture (it lost to "Going My Way") was the first genuine example of film noir, an opinion that fans of 1941's "The Maltese Falcon" might want to challenge. John Huston's film based on Dashiell Hammett's novel is considered by many to mark the beginning of this subgenre characterized by dark shadows, moral ambiguity, and femme fatales.
