Dillinger's Wild Ride: The Year That Made America's Public Enemy Number One

John Dillinger has a story that has been told over and over again and while I liked this book it really doesn't offer any new insights into his life or actions. Dillinger is basically portrayed as a criminal who caught the public eye and enjoyed it. This book doesn't romanticize him but does make note of the romantic qualities many others saw in him.

I did like the part toward the end that dealt with the growth of the Dillinger legend, however this book misses the chance to examine Dillinger's interaction with other criminal groups of his time.

John Dillinger Slept Here is a great book, full of detailed history of St. Paul gangster activity from the 1920's and 30's. A long time history buff, I started to get curious about St. Paul's role in the gangster era after reading Steven Thayer, and even more interested after taking the local gangster tour--only to find out that the gangster tour appears to have been taken from the pages of Maccabee's book. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

In the most documented account of the "Little Bohemia" FBI Mea Culpa, be right there when the story is told minute by minute and with unbelievable detail. The description of the cars and firearms involved is a saga into itself. I had to visit the little town of Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin and walk where the players walked and see the actual bullet holes. We also get an insight into Baby Face Nelson and his "take no prisoners' persona. This book will give you goose bumps but you cannot put it down.

The Dillinger Days

If this were 1963, I'd advise you to buy this book. However, it's 2007, and while John Toland did an admirable job researching his material and visiting the various sites made notorious by the public enemies whose exploits he depicted, the fact is that much of the book's contents is old news and simply inaccurate. A fantastic read at the time, but, simply, outdated today.
