Westward Ho

John Wayne, Sheila Bromley, Frank McGlynn Jr., Jim Farley, Jack Curtis
I am a John Wayne fan & have over 70 of his movies in my collection. I agree with Mr. Wu's description of the plot. It is one of the better of John Wayne's grade B Republic movies. It is the only movie in which John Wayne "sang" & the dubbed in voice is definitely not John Wayne's voice. John Wayne did not want to be a singing cowboy & it allowed others like Gene Autry & Roy Rogers to fill that role. I was pleased that the film was reworked & the DVD had good audio & picture.

Cowboy Heroes of the Silver Screen

Tim McCoy, Tex Ritter, Buck Jones, Tom Keene, Hoot Gibson
Just a short review for the moment. If I get just one compilation a year like this I will consider myself lucky. These guys did it right. There are 12 movies, 3 Tom Mix shorts, a vintage interview with both Yakima Canutt and Iron Eyes Cody. And just to make you feel good there's a catchy banjo tune playing during the set-up screens. It has roughly the same tune as the title song in Tex Ritter's "Hitting the Trail". A couple of times I've left a set-up screen on just to play the song over and over again.

Zorro: The Masked Avenger

Robert Livingston, Reed Hadley, John Carroll, George J. Lewis, Clayton Moore
The fictional character Zorro (Spanish for 'fox') first appeared in "The Curse of Capistrano," a five-part 1919 magazine series. Don Diego de la Vega (aka Zorro) was a nobleman and master swordsman who lived in Spanish and Mexican-era California. With his black cape and mask, fearless Zorro defended the people from various oppressors and outlaws, making his enemies look ridiculous in the process.

Zorro has a long cinematic history. "The Mark of Zorro" (1920) was the first-ever UNITED ARTISTS release.
