"The Red Kimona" is one of five films on three DVDs in Kino Video's "First Ladies - Early Women Filmmakers" series which presents a very interesting range of silent films produced, directed or written by women who made their mark in the early, male-dominated film industry. "The Red Kimona" is rather special because not one but three women collaborated on this project, the story and screenplay being written by women, and produced by Dorothy Davenport Reid, by then the widow of the very popular actor, Wallace Reid.

This film has a lot going for it, even though it's more like fun entertainment as opposed to a heavy classic masterpiece. It was directed by Cecil B. DeMille, whom most people either love or hate. Though he's largely remembered today for his religious epics, this film is the type of picture he did more of. It still has the feel of a morality play, but overall it's not as heavy-handed as the type of DeMille picture most people associate him with. The print is also beautiful, with a lot of tinted and hand-colored title cards, complete with lovely drawings and ornate letters, tinted scenes, and even one scene towards the end that appears to be in very early Technicolor.

Joan the Woman

Well, though having watched Milla Jovovich as the new "Joan of Arc" in Luc Besson`s film a few weeks ago (although it is very good) no other treatment of the story comes as close as this 1916 masterpiece, which stands up as one of the first true epics in cinema history. You may wonder about the melodramatic storyline and the propaganda input into the movie when glorifying Joan of Arc as the saviour of France even 600 years later from the German enemy, but these scenes are more than made up by the typical DeMille treatment, involving grand scale battle scenes, beautiful sets for the time, a great performance by opera diva Geraldine Farrar (very holy) and a rousing organ score which will certainly haunt you even after seeing the movie.

I bought this film because I am collecting films with Wallace Reid in them as he was a relative of mine. I had never seen any interpretation of Bizets Carmen or any performance by Geraldine Farrar and I found this film to be very entertaining indeed! And the jacket of the CD contained a long biography on Ms Farrar that was just fascinating. And, of course, I was excited to see another film with Wallace Reid in it too! He was very dashing and handsome in his military uniform. Also, there was an actual bullfight in one scene of this film which was supposed to be Old Spain but was really 1915 LA! Lots of action in this film and I think anyone would enjoy it.
