I bought the collection only to see Fury, by Fritz Lang, after I had seen "M" and "Metropolis". I ended up seeing all these films almost back to back over a few days! What an interesting collection of films. They all have intelligent dialogue and each deals with an important issue (eg, racism, homosexuality, injustices in the justice system, the madness of the celebrity culture, pacifism). A real treat in that we can see how these important issues were treated in the middle part of last century (not so differently to now.

Universal owns a vast catalog of Pre-Code movies, many of which the studio purchased in the 1970s from Paramount; I hope this boxset collection is the first of many. Offering six movies on three DVDs, the set doesn't feature the most outrageous or even the most memorable of Pre-Code Hollywood, but it's a start. Maybe if enough of us buy a copy Universal will take notice and continue releasing more...

Image-wise the movies look relatively good. Grain is as always evident, but each of these movies is over seventy years old.

Without adding yet another critique of the actors, limits of the soundstage, and story recap that too many seem bent on reprising...I would just like to make the observation that this story was refreshingly unique compared to some similar productions that I would label as pro-FDR/New Deal propaganda. While some of Hollywood's preachier attempts alluded to the notion that the Federal Government would be the "Big Brother" (CCC, NRA, WPA) taking care of the people who were/are either too poor or stupid to take care of themselves, Dead End clearly illustrates the simple truth that "we" (the people) are our brother's keeper.
