Rarely do you get the full treatment of foreign film to DVD. I equate this DVD release to the Criterion treatment since there are just tons of things included. This film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film to Pedro Almodovar. He is a prolific director and his films just get better and better. This may be the reason why this DVD release has so many extras. First, the DVD has both the wide screen and full screen format on both sides. Also, you can select to have the film without dialog and just the soundtrack by Alberto Iglesias which is superb.

Matador (1986)

This is a brilliant, if unsettling movie. On its surface, it revels in various sorts of violence, including attempted rape, bullfights gone bloody, and serial killings, real or imagined. Beneath the flashy surface, though, Almodovar has a serious aim. He's examining the effects on his contemporary Spanish characters of a religion that was frequently rigidified into pharisaism and a code of manly behavior often reduced to mere "machismo" during the immediately preceding reign of Franco. What he presents us with in the film is a set of characters malignly influenced by such cultural baggage.

Bad Education (Original Uncut NC-17 Edition)

This film was amazing! Everything about this film was perfect. Gael Garcia Bernal gives an Oscar worthy performance, and Pedro Almodovar gives superb direction. I will not go into the story, since you can find these details elsewhere, but I will tell you that this was one of the most rewarding cinematic experiences that I have had in a long time. Most viewers have complained that the film is hard to follow, but I did not find this to be true. The narrative structure of the film is indeed complex, but it only adds to the mystery of the film.

The Flower of My Secret

Almodovar's work seems to follow a progression. It seems to me that The Flower Of My Secret actually marked the beginning of a new stage. As opposed to his previous movies, this one leaves off most of the comedy effects to focus on the intricacies of a writer's life, Leo (short for Leocadia), who struggles to find her way in a life that everybody insists to keep her sheltered from: Her husband doesn't love her, her best friend keeps a shocking secret from her, and even her maid and the maid's son keep a double life behind her back.
