As a Southern historian I liked the book very much. However, I was and am confused about the hospital where the book began. It seemed to be Chimborazzo in Richmond as he was wounded at Petersburg. However, I thought later that it may have been in central North Carolina as he was traveling west toward the mountains. That was never explained and the map inside the cover helped very little. I felt the book dragged somewhat at times, but overall was excellent. I also saw the movie and was pleasantly surprised that it was very good and stayed close to the book.
