Throw Down is a real crowd-pleaser despite being more interested in the quirky characters than the judo bouts in the film. Johnnie To's tribute to Kurosawa and filled with references to Sugata Sanshiro (far more than the one that To admits to), it actually feels more like a Hong Kong version of Britcom Black Books, with Luis Koo's drunken former judo prodigy staggering his way from scam to scam with his two employees between mismanaging his nightclub with about as much grasp of conventional reality as Bernard Black.

Opening in Hong Kong this week is a movie that sounds like James Bond but may play closer to Austin Powers. On His Majesty's Secret Service (Dai noi muk taam 009), written and directed by the prolific -- and wildly fluctuating in quality -- Wong Jing, stars Louis Koo, Barbie Hsu, and Sandra Ng in a 'nonsense' comedy that is set in a historical period, long before British secret agents began drinking martinis. Andrew Mack of Twitch found a plot description at Far East Films: "The secret service has been responsible for protecting the Emperor for generations .

Triad Election

The ever-reliable Johnnie To's Election 2: Harmony is a Virtue aka Triad Election is in many ways more impressive and definitely more ambitious than its predecessor even though it lacks its relentless forward momentum. Where the first film was a literal relay race, this is more of a distance event, but it's a much more engrossing look at the nature and politics of corruption. It does amp up the violence from the first film, particularly in one literally grinding sequence, but it never deteriorates into a gore show, focusing less on Simon Yam's Triad chairman after a second term than reluctant contender Louis Koo, contrasting the one's troubled relationship with his son (who qualified for a lifetime in therapy at the end of the first film) with the other's hopes for his future offspring.

Lost in Time

I saw this for the first time on a trans-Pacific flight back to the USA from Hong Kong. The film has a universal appeal because its themes--love lost, love found, and the redeeming power of love-- are universal. But as a native of Hong Kong who no longer lives there, I also thought it was ABOUT Hong Kong, that is, about what it really feels like to live in Hong Kong, to drive around and walk its streets. Anyone who has been to Hong Kong, or even seen pictures of the place, will have noticed the vital role played by the mini-bus in urban life.
