Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1957 Television Production)

I have seen Cinderella stories more times than I can count. This
is R and H musical version and it is Leslie Ann Warren versus
Julie Andrews. I did not care much for the Andrews version. Julie
announced at the beginning that this was a one time only production
on t.v. She also mentioned doing My Fair Lady right around the same time.
R and H cast some well oiled stage stars in this show and that's part of the
problem. It's a little too oily for me. Andrews looks uncomfortable in her role.

Creature From the Black Lagoon (Universal Studios Classic Monster Collection)

i was so glad to find this on DVD, it was just as I had remembered it from some years back. It's good to see the old classics without all the fancy computer generated effects, it makes you appreciate how difficult it was to produce films during that time.

Bend of the River

Beautiful, allegorical Western from the legendary team of director Anthony Mann and star James Stewart results with fine action and great cinematography.

Stewart portrays a loner leading a wagon train westward trying to escape his renegade past. Along the way he runs into mysterious Arthur Kennedy, whom Stewart saves from a lynch mob's noose. They have great cameredrie, but that is tested when Stewart has to get supplies for his wagon pary who will not survive if they get through. Gold miners in the area need the supplies as well and offer a high price for the goods, which leads to conflict among the two men.

The Gunfight at Dodge City

"The Gunfight at Dodge City" was one of many Western made by the great Joel McCrea, one of those actors who seemed born to play Western characters. He made several outstanding, many that were pretty good, and some that were at best, fair to middling.

This film falls into the fair to middling category. This fictionalized account of how gambler/gunfighter Bat Masterson became the marshal in Dodge City is uninvolving and takes too many shortcuts with logic and believability. Masterson becomes marshal when his brother is killed, but when the killer is discovered and is shot down by Masterson, the revelation of the killer's identity is regarded as an afterthought.
