This is the 1940 version of this tremendous story. It is absolutely the best movie depicting Daphne DuMaurier's story of Rebecca. The cast is outstanding, the photography is great and the story moves along at an interesting pace. There are several remakes of this story but they do not even compare. Closed captions have been added which adds to the enjoyment of this movie.

Suspicion

I love both of these actors, but this plot wasn't my cup of tea. He takes her precious chairs to sell for gambling money, and has schemes to make a futune quick and easy.He calls her "Monkey face" which is appalling too! I love Joan Fontaine and just felt sad for her in this movie. The ending was unfulfilling too. Plus my copy had stop and starts that interrupted the dvd many times, irritation!

Among the main reasons this 1946 Robert Stevenson film version still remains the definitive filmed dramatization are its spectacular sets and great shadowy Expressionist cinematography; Thornfield is imagined here as a great Gothic dream of a place, with turrets and crenellations and stone fireplaces and great windows that could never exist in real life. It's much more of a dream of a great house than any mansion could be, even Haddon hall (the supposed inspiration for the house in Charlotte Bronte's novel, and used for locations for the Fraco Zeffirelli film version).
