The story couldn't be simpler, in fact: The Man feels trapped burdened by family responsibilities, as embodied by The Wife; and The Woman From The City is every temptation & fantasy wrapped up in a flapper's flimsy dress.

A Star Is Born

A Star Is Born packs a great deal of action, suspense, drama and even some light comedy into a film that is truly remarkable. The acting is very convincing; Fredric March in particular gives blood to make his character comes to life on the screen. The cinematography and the choreography both work well, especially in crowd scenes in which there are lots of extras. The plot moves along at a good pace, too.

When the action starts, we quickly meet Esther Blodgett (Janet Gaynor) who comes home with her younger brother from going to the movies.

The Young in Heart

Janet Gaynor, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Paulette Goddard, Roland Young, Billie Burke
This is what might be called a "light romance" and not a screwball comedy at all. It's about a family of con artists that goes straight after encountering a generous old lady. The casting is poor. (It was nearly Gaynor's last film, for obvious reasons. Richard Carlson is wasted entirely, and Fairbanks is wholly unconvincing.) There are no laughs. Some of the sets are incredibly phony. And in the end the director had to rely on a parade of pups to generate good feelings. In short, this is a time waster, alarmingly out of step with the great comedies being made at the time.
