I own quite a few DVD sets of the great silent comedians, including the large Buster Keaton set from Kino. This set ties that one in my enjoyment and its ability to lift my mood if I'm feeling down. Everyone else has talked about what is in this set, let me say a few words about what isn't here that you might expect to see. Lloyd's first talking picture, 1929's "Welcome Danger" is missing. It wasn't his best work, and he does play one of the most annoying characters he ever portrayed, but I feel it should have been included for its historical significance.

I just received my copy of the three-disc set. I like the general way in which they have presented the material. Excellent musical scores composed for each film are worth noting. The organizing of each section is also thoughtful: by studio, star or genre. The quality of most of the films is not first rate however. When compared to the quality of KINO or Image Entertainment or even Lobster Films, these films are slightly out of focus and look like copies from videos at times. I'm no expert in this area, but like the first box they put out, the quality is only fair.

Harold Lloyd was a top star in his day; and for good reason.

This has "Safety-last", Harold Lloyd's best film, produced by Hal Roach, producer of "Little Rascals, Our Gang", and "Laurel and Hardy". "Safety Last" is very clever, has an interesting story, very funny, laugh-out-loud-funny in one scene, unique, with some danger. It is not a film with just music; rather a film designed so you understand the action, just by watching, at a good pace. A lost art. (I did not care for Harold's later, talking-pictures.

If you are a fan and own all of Harold Lloyds available DVDs...you may have virtually all the clips on this compilation but I do and maybe in this ADD world its nice to have a "greatest hits" of sorts to throw in the DVD player when you aren't as interested in character and story and just want to be remined of Mr Lloyd's particular genius. For those out there who don't own the staggeringly wonderful newline Box Set....this is a great intro...if you find yourself wanting more after this...that's the place to go.
