This movie is one of my all time favorites. It combines fine acting, incredible disguises, and just the right amount of suspense. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to experience pre-computer generated movies. Actors had to really act and camera skills were most important.

Seven Days in May

If ever there was a time to view this movie it is now, in todays poisoned political climate of distrust and near civil disobedience, re: Tea Party movement.
The plot is simple. A once popular USA President is now on a path that is both protested by the general public to the point of mass protests, and reviled by a cadre of his top military leaders in the Pentagon. They decide to attempt a coup d'etat.
Not only is this another top notch and suspenseful directing effort by John Frankenheimer, who stunned with "The Manchurian Candidate" two years previous, but it is another tour de force performance by the vastly underrated Burt Lancaster, in the starring role, which propels this beyond ordinary melodrama.

"Judgment at Nuremberg," directed by Stanley Kramer from a screenplay by Abby Mann, is set in 1948, three years after the most important Nazi leaders had been tried for their crimes. In the dock are four German judges who issued rulings in line with the Nazi policies of forced sterilizations and racial purity. Spencer Tracy plays an American judge who heads the tribunal that will adjudicate the fate of the defendants. Hans Rolfe, portrayed by Oscar-winner Maximilian Schell, is a fiery defense attorney who insists that his client, Ernst Janning (Burt Lancaster), is not only a judge but a respected intellectual and patriot who did what he thought was right.

From Here to Eternity

In hindsight, this 1953 classic doesn't seem as much a military drama as it does a highly charged soap opera, which shouldn't come as a surprise given that master filmmaker Fred Zinnemann (The Nun's Story) was at the helm. The veteran director upended the western genre just a year earlier with the Gary Cooper classic High Noon, and he places the same incendiary focus of character over action here, that is, until the inevitable climax which uses the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as a catharsis for the characters' dilemmas now dwarfed by the coming world war.
