Kiss of Death (Fox Film Noir)

Nick Bianco and his gang sweat through the first few minutes of this knockout noir as they pull off a jewelry heist on a high floor in a Manhattan skyscraper. The tension is superbly handled as the trio waits out a long elevator ride down, knowing that one of the tied up or unconscious jewelers could be alerting the police at any time, and the Christmas joy and cheer around them only heightens the anger and frustration that Bianco feels at having to resort to a life of crime, though we are told (by the interesting choice of a female narrator) that he's been trying to go straight.

Destry Rides Again is one of my very favorite movies because it has everything that you could ever want in a film- Wild West Action, Romance, Musical numbers, Drama, Comedy, Perfect performances by everyone in the film, Tear jerking scenes, a great director, great camera shots, and more. This movie grabs your attention from start to finish. I've seen this movie a number of times and never get tired of it. Back in the 1980's I took a trip with my parents by plane to Tucson, Arizona and while we were there we went to see the site of where this movie was made.

I was so glad when on a whim one day I noticed that old Hammer horror titles previously released by Anchor Bay Entertainment appeared to be getting a re-release. Boy, was I wrong about that! Don't be fooled. DVD-R's are no substitute for a real factory manufactured product. The pictures appear murky, bleeding and washed out even though its obviously a direct burn from a genuine Anchor Bay DVD. The sound drops in and out. I played each disc on 3 different players manufactured by 3 different companies.

The same year Stagecoach was released, John Wayne and Claire Trevor teamed for another movie, Allegheny Uprising, that's almost completely forgetten in relation to the John Ford classic. In 1760 after three years in captivity by an Indian tribe, James Smith and his friend, the Professor, return home to find several tribes on the warpath. These Indians have been supplied with muskets, shot and powder, and tomahawks by a trader looking to make it big. Smith and his neighbors must figure out how to stop the traders before they too are attacked, all the while dealing with the British command nearby who thinks Smith and Co.
