The first four ROAD pictures are real treasures of comedy and music. Hope and Crosby's easy style have often been immitated by newer comics and even animated characters, but never equalled. The only downside to this collection is putting all on one disc. Just don't like double sided discs when not necessary. Making this a two disc set should not have increased production costs enough to increase the purchase price. Finally, WHY only the first four? Was it a rights issue? The 5th, RIO, must surely still be under Universal/Paramounts control.

Silk Stockings

With the passing of Cyd Charisse last week at age 86, it's worth seeking out what is probably her finest work on celluloid. Granted as an actress, she was bland, and as a singer, she was dubbed (this time by the sonorous-sounding Carol Richards). But as a dancer, she was extraordinary. Along with Vera-Ellen, the ballet-trained Charisse was in the top echelon of the female dancers that MGM showcased during the studio's golden years of which this film is one of its final stops. The clearest evidence of this claim can be found in the title tune when she dances with beauty and precision elegantly changing from her drab street clothes into silk and satin.

Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie

The most interesting thing on this DVD, to me, is in the bonus features. There is a game show called 'I've got a secret' that Lucy is on. The show has a guest who has a secret and must answers questions from the celebrity panel. The guest whispers in the ear of the host the secret, to which they display on the screen(or something along the lines of): 'witnessed the assassination of President Lincoln.' This show was in the mid 1950's and this man is in his late 90's. He was 5 years old when he witnessed the assassination.

The Ghost Breakers

I have watched this movie many times over a period of years. Bob Hope is at his best, and Paulette Goddard is beautiful and spunky! The dialogue is crisp and memorable. The plot and characters unfold perfectly. The clothing, furniture and architecture is the real stuff for the late 30's, including Edith Head gowns and even one hidden photo of a Varga painting. See the use of shadow to create three visual objects per scene, especially those with Willie Best. Just a super, very enjoyable movie!
